Most of the 18 000 inhabitants make their living in agriculture. Up to last year the club was known under the name Tsement Ararat, under which it won the double in 1998. In the meantime the local cement factory had to close down, thus reducing their football sponsoring considerably. One of the leftovers of this era is the Tsement stadium, which holds only 1000 spectators. It is being renovated and enlarged. Under the new name Araks Ararat the club became the most important business of the town. Since the beginning of this year the team is coached by Samwen Petrosjan, who played for Ararat in the seventies. When he was a junior, he was a member of various selections of the Soviet Union. Five Ararat players play regularly for the national team, and eight belong to the U21 and U18 selections. Ararat liegt 40 km südöstlich von Jerewan an der Grenze zu Aserbaidschan. Die meisten der 18'000 Einwohner verdienen ihren Lebensunterhalt in der Landwirtschaft. Bis letztes Jahr war der Klub unter dem Namen Tsement Ararat bekannt, unter dem es 1998 das Double schaffte. Unterdessen musste die ortsansässige Zementfabrik ihre Produktion und somit ihr finanzielles Engagement im Fussball stark einschränken. Überbleibsel früherer Tage ist noch das Tsement-Stadion, das nur 1000 Zuschauern Platz bietet und nun renoviert und vergrössert wird. Unter der neuen Bezeichnung Araks Ararat entwickelte sich der Verein einstweilen zum wichtigsten Unternehmen der Stadt. Seit diesem Jahr wird die Mannschaft von Samwen Petrosjan trainiert, der in den 70er Jahren für Ararat spielte. Als Junior kam er in verschiedenen Auswahlen der Sowjetunion zum Einsatz. National ist sein Team offensiv wie defensiv stark. In der Nationalmannschaft kommen fünf Spieler Araks mehr oder weniger regelmässig zum Einsatz und acht gehören den U21- und U18-Auswahlen des Landes an.
