In the European Cup they reached the final once (1982), the semi-finals three times and the quarter finals eight times, but never again since 1982. These statistics show how much the club of long tradition suffered since they were involved in a corruption scandal in the mid eighties. In 1998 Adidas boss Robert-Louis Dreyfus, who is also the president of Olympique Marseille, got in on the club as the administrator and fund raiser, but the club remained unstable in terms of structures and performance. Ciobotariu, Selymes, Brocken, Dimas and Goossens, five standard players at the end of the season, had joined the club only during the season. The Lokonda brothers (Schalke) and Mbo Mpenza (Sporting Lisbon) have left in winter. Tomislav Ivic from Croatia, Zeljko Mijac and former player Jean Thissen followed one another as the coach. A week before the cup final (1:4 against Genk) Thissen was replaced by Ivic – on demand of the players –, who had been named Director after his dismissal. Continuity is not considered important at Standard. Under these circumstances it is not surprising that the players followed up a series of ten wins with seven losses in the last eight games. The club management promised to do better in the future. The Portuguese midfielder Antonio Folha will come back from FC Porto to Standard. The UEFA Intertoto Cup, however, will be played with the juniors' team. Standard Lüttich wurde acht Mal belgischer Meister, zuletzt vor 17 Jahren. Auf dem Trainerposten reichten sich der Kroate Tomislav Ivic, sein Vize Zeljko Mijac und der frühere Spieler Jean Thissen die Klinke in die Hand. Eine Woche vor dem Cupfinal gegen Genk (1:4) wurde Thissen auf Wunsch der Spieler durch... Ivic ersetzt, der nach seiner Absetzung zum Sportdirektor bestimmt worden war. Kontinuität wird in Lüttich nicht gross geschrieben. Unter diesen Umständen liessen die Spieler einer Serie von zehn Siegen sieben Niederlagen in den letzten acht Runden folgen. Für die Zukunft verspricht die Vereinsleitung Besserung. So kehrt der portugiesische Mittelfeldspieler Antonio Folha vom FC Porto zu Standard zurück. Den UEFA-Intertoto-Cup wollen die Belgier aber mit der Nachwuchs-Mannschaft bestreiten.
