| Two events mark the history of Bradford: in 1911 the club from Northern England won the F.A. Cup against Newcastle (1:0 after prolongation). 15 years ago, however, the city made negative headlines. On May 11, 1985, 52 people died and 60 were severely injured, when a wooden stand caught fire. The recent past on the other hand was positive. On the very last day of the first season in Premier League Bradford surprisingly succeeded in avoiding relegation by winning 1:0 over Liverpool. Paul Jewell's team was considered relegation candidate number one, as the pillars of the team are fairly old. The former Scottish international Stuart McCall and the Welsh striker Dean Saunders are 36 years old, while defender Gunnar Halle is 35, and their best goal-scorer Dean Windass (10 goals past season) is over 30, too. After the successful 1999/2000 season the club hopes that theses players will remain for another while. | |
| Aus der Geschichte Bradfords ragen zwei Daten heraus. 1911 gewann der Verein aus Nordengland im Final des F.A.-Cups gegen Newcastle United (1:0 n.V.) seinen bisher einzigen Titel. Negative Schlagzeilen schrieb Bradford vor 15 Jahren. Am 11. Mai 1985 kamen beim Brand der hölzernen Hauptribüne 52 Menschen ums Leben, beinahe 60 wurden schwer verletzt. 11'000 Zuschauer hatten sich damals im Valley-Parade-Stadion eingefunden, um den Titel in der 3. Division zu feiern. Die jüngste Vergangenheit indes war positiv. Am letzten Spieltag seiner ersten Saison in der Premier League schaffte Bradford in diesem Frühjahr mit einem 1:0-Erfolg über Liverpool überraschend den Ligaerhalt. Dabei hatte die Mannschaft von Trainer Paul Jewell als Abstiegskandidat Nummer 1 gegolten, denn die meisten Leistungsträger sind in die Jahre gekommen. Der ehemalige schottische Internationale Stuart McCall und der walisische Stürmer Dean Saunders sind schon 36, Abwehrspieler Gunnar Halle 35 und Topskorer Dean Windass auch über 30 Jahre alt. Windass schoss in der vergangenen Saison zehn Tore. Nach diesem Erfolg hofft man, dass sie dem Klub auch in Zukunft die Treue halten. | |
