| The Association de la Jeunesse Auxerroise, founded in 1905 by the priest Abbé Deschamps, have lost their integrating figure. After 39 years of coaching for Auxerre, 61-year-old Guy Roux, senior coach of all of Europe, asked for cancellation of the contract and took over as General Manager. The son of a farmer, Roux lead the provincial club from the amateur league to the top of the European clubs. Daniel Rolland, the manager of the football school, followed in Roux' footsteps so that continuity is guaranteed, as all the teams in the club from the kids to the first team play the 4-3-3 system with man marking and two genuine wings. Left wing Diomède, however, one of the key players in this system, left the Burgundy team for Liverpool in the English Premier League. After winning both the championship and the cup in 1996 the football school owned by the club had to be refinanced by selling players such as Cantona, Boli, Roche, Ferreri, Laslandes and Taribo West. These losses translated into last year's near relegation. This spring the club from the Burgundy missed the UEFA Cup only because of a string of eight losses in the last ten rounds. Their juniors, however, are still lonely at the top: the U17 team won the cup twice in the last two years. | |
| Die Association de la Jeunesse Auxerroise, 1905 durch Priester Abbé Deschamps gegründet, hat ihre Integrationsfigur verloren. Der 61jährige Guy Roux, dienstältester Trainer Europas, bat nach 39 Jahren Amtstätigkeit um die Auflösung seines Vertrags und liess sich zum General Manager promovieren. Der Bauernsohn Roux hatte den Provinzverein von den Amateuren zur europäischen Spitze geführt. Mit Daniel Rolland trat der Leiter des Ausbildungszentrums Roux' Nachfolge an. Damit wurde im sportlichen Bereich die Kontinuität gewährleistet, spielen doch alle Mannschaften von Klein bis Gross im 4-3-3-System mit Manndeckung und zwei echten Flügeln. Einer der Schlüsselspieler dieses Systems, der linke Flügel Diomède, verliess allerdings die Burgunder und wechselte in die englische Premier League zu Liverpool. Nach dem Double von 1996 musste die klubeigene Schule mit dem Verkauf von Spielern wie Cantona, Boli, Roche, Ferreri, Laslandes oder Traibo West refinanziert werden. Diese Abgänge bezahlte Auxerre vor Jahresfrist fast mit dem Abstieg. In diesem Frühling verpassten die Burgunder die Qualifikation für den UEFA-Cup nur wegen acht sieglosen Partien in den letzten zehn Runden. Im Nachwuchsbereich sind sie aber weiterhin einsame Spitze. Die U17 gewann zuletzt zweimal den Cup. | |
