| Before last season Stuttgart had lost Akpoborie (Wolfsburg), Bobic (Dortmund) and Verlaat (Ajax Amsterdam), three pillars of the team. These losses were especially felt in the home games: Stuttgart lost nine out of 17 matches. The home record was one of the worst in the Bundesliga, while away they were third best. Coach Rangnick had the defense play a flat back four, which is still rather uncommon in German football. He tried every tactical system, but never really succeeded in integrating star midfielder Balakov. For the upcoming season they have strengthened the squad with defensive midfielder Stefan Blank (Hannover 96) and striker Jochen Seitz (Unterhaching). The Austrian goal-keeper Franz Wohlfahrt, who has played 44 times for the national team, left Stuttgart for Austria Vienna. Home-matches in the UEFA-Intertoto-Cup will be played at Karlsruhe due to works at Gottlieb-Daimler-stadium. In September, president Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder will retire after more than 25 years in office. He is a candidate to replace Dr. Egidius Braun, the president of the German Football Association. | |
| Vor der vergangenen Saison verlor der VfB Stuttgart mit Akpoborie (Wolfsburg), Bobic (Dortmund) und Verlaat (Ajax Amsterdam) drei Leistungsträger. Dieser Potentialverlust machte sich besonders zu Hause bemerkbar, wo von 17 Partien neun verloren gingen. Der viertschlechtesten Heimbilanz stand auswärts die Drittbeste gegenüber. Trainer Rangnick liess die vier Verteidiger auf einer Linie spielen, einer für deutsche Mannschaften immer noch ungewohnten Variante. Trotz vieler taktischer Versuche gelang es ihm nie, Mittelfeldstar Balakov in sein System erfolgreich zu integrieren. Auf die Spielzeit 2000/01 hin haben die Schwaben ihr Kader mit dem defensiven Mittelfeldspieler Stefan Blank (Hannover 96) und Stürmer Jochen Seitz (Unterhaching) ergänzt. Der VfB muss seine Heimspiele des UEFA-Intertoto-Cups übrigens in Karlsruhe austragen, da im heimischen Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion einer neuer Rasen verlegt wird. Der 44fache österreichische Nationalgoalie Franz Wohlfahrt zog vom VfB zu Austria Wien. Vereinspräsident Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder wird im September nach über 25 Jahren Amtszeit zurück treten.
