Coach: Vasilis Teortopoulos (45) Kalamata look back to a turbulent season. Only half a year after the Peloponnesus club was re-promoted from second division, president Papadopoulos stepped down. Last December the club was taken over by the Dutch company "Nedmen", which meant that coach Amorim had to go. The man from Brazil was close to Papadopoulos and unwanted by the new management. On Christmas the team was bound for relegation with one win on their account. In January Amorim was replaced by Teortopoulos. The 45-year-old not only avoided relegation but reached the best result since the club's promotion five years ago. Because of Papadopoulos' excellent relations to foreign countries, there are many foreigners in Kalamata's squad. Many of them come from Ghana, among them the 17-year-old Hilton, highly talented. With 12 goals scored last season, he was the best scorer of the team. It is very uncertain, whether he will stay much longer in the harbor town with 200 000 inhabitants, as the big clubs from Athens and Piraeus have already shown interest in him. The Dutch owners of the club would like to integrate more young Greek players into the team, thus attracting more spectators. In the 1999/2000 season only an average of 3000 fans attended the home games in the Mesiniakos stadium. Kalamata hat eine turbulente Saison hinter sich. Nur ein halbes Jahr nach dem dem Verein vom Peloponnes der sofortige Wiederaufstieg aus der zweiten Division gelungen war, gab Präsident Papadopoulos sein Amt ab. Im vergangenen Dezember wurde der Verein vom holländischen Unternehmen "Nedmen" übernommen. Nach dem Besitzerwechsel waren auch die Tage von Trainer Amorim gezählt. Der Brasilianer war ein enger Vertrauter von Papadopoulos und der neuen Klubführung nicht mehr genehm. Allerdings stimmten unter Amorim auch die Resultate nicht. An Weihnachten stand die Mannschaft mit nur einem Sieg auf einem Abstiegsplatz. Im Januar wurde Amorim durch Teortopoulos ersetzt. Der 45-Jährige schaffte in der Rückrunde tatsächlich noch den Klassenerhalt, ja, er war sogar für das beste Ergebnis Kalamatas seit seinem ersten Aufstieg in die höchste Spielklasse vor fünf Jahren besorgt. Wegen der guten Beziehungen, die Papadopoulos mit dem Ausland unterhielt, stehen im Kader Kalamatas viele Ausländer. Vier davon kommen aus Ghana. Unter ihnen auch das 17-jährige Talent Hilton. Er war in der vergangenen Saison mit zwölf Toren der Topskorer seiner Mannschaft. Ob er jedoch noch lange in der 200'000 Einwohner zählenden Hafenstadt spielen wird, ist ungewiss, denn bereits haben die Grossklubs aus Athen und Piräus ein Auge auf ihn geworfen. Die holländischen Klubeigner wollen in Zukunft vermehrt griechische Nachwuchsspieler in die Mannschaft einbauen. Damit sollen auch wieder mehr Zuschauer angezogen werden. In der Saison 1999/2000 kamen durchschnittlich nur knapp 3000 Fans zu den Heimspielen ins Stadion Mesiniakos.
