| FC Floriana being Malta's oldest and most successful team, they were allowed to play the game honoring the 100-year anniversary of the Maltese Football Association. Of the 25 championships, however, only one was realized in the last 22 years. Floriana's William Camenzuli, midfielder Jonathan Holland and striker George Mallia formed the backbone of the Maltese U21 selection. Holland and Mallia already made it to the national team. Apart from coach Traiko Sokolov also 32-year-old Ivan Vassilev (defense) and Todor Zaytzev (midfield) are Bulgarians on the club's payroll, but the most important player is midfielder Rufin Oba. The man from Congo scored 17 times last season, but poor defense was responsible for the fact that Floriana lost contact with the top teams despite a good start. A year ago the Maltese club made it to the second round of the Intertoto Cup for the first time in their third appearance since 1995 by beating Aberystwyth from Wales. In 20 appearances in the European Cups they were promoted only once, too, when they eliminated Ekranas Panavezys (LTU) in 1994. | |
| Der FC Floriana ist der älteste und erfolgreichste Klub Maltas, weshalb er kürzlich das Jubiläumsspiel zum 100jährigen Bestehen des Verbandes bestreiten durfte. Von den 25 Meistertiteln fiel aber nur einer in die letzten 22 Jahre. Mit Goalie Matthew Camilleri, Verteidiger William Camenzuli, Aufbauer Jonathan Holland und Stürmer George Mallia stellte Floriana, das nationaler Nachwuchs-Meister wurde, letzte Saison den Stamm der maltesischen U21-Auswahl. Holland und Mallia schafften bereits den Sprung ins Nationalteam. Neben Trainer Traiko Sokolov stehen mit den 32jährigen Ivan Vassilev (Abwehr) und Todor Zaytzev (Mittelfeld) zwei weitere Bulgaren auf der Lohnliste des Traditionsklubs. Trotzdem hingen die Leistungen Florianas stark von Mittelfeldstar Rufin Oba ab. Der Kongolese traf letzte Saison 17 Mal. Die ungenügenden Defensivleistungen lagen der Tatsache zugrunde, dass Floriana trotz gutem Start den Anschluss zur nationalen Spitze bald verlor. Vor Jahresfrist überstanden die Malteser im Intertoto-Cup bei ihrer schon dritten Teilnahme seit 1995 gegen Aberystwyth (WAL) erstmals eine Runde. Auch im Europacup kamen sie bei 20 Versuchen einzig 1994 gegen Ekranas Panavezys (LTU) weiter. | |
