As the Lurgan team were eliminated prematurely from the cup, the qualification for the UEFA cup was unreachable for them, too. The fans made manager Roy Walker responsible for the disappointing result. The very successful business man had taken over Glenavon in May 1999, after clinching the championhsip twice with the Crusaders in the last eight years. "Wir sind ein Team von Siegern. Verletzungen und Sperren von Schlüsselspielern, die alle über 30 Jahre alt sind, hinderte seine Mannschaft im Frühling aber an der Entfaltung ihrer Möglichkeinten. In der Meisterschaft büsste Glenavon 18 Punkte auf Linfield ein und verpasste den seit 1960 vergebens angestrebten Titel. Weil das Team aus Lurgan sich auch im Cup vorzeitig verabschiedete, blieb die Qualifikation für den UEFA-Cup ein unerreichtes Ziel. Die Anhänger machten Manager Roy Walker für das enttäuschende Abschneiden verantwortlich. Der sehr erfolgreiche Geschäftsmann hatte Glenavon im Mai 1999 übernommen, nachdem er mit Crusaders in acht Jahren zweimal Meister wurde.
