| Peter I. gave the city the name in reference to the Apostle St. Peter. It was him who in the 17th century built the castle and the harbor. Until the Russian Revolution in 1917 the industrial and cultural city was Russia's capital. The city was called Leningrad, when the football club was founded under the name Stalinez, since 1940 it is called Zenit. Despite the cup win in May 1999 coach Anatolj Dawidov was fired in winter, after Zenit was eliminated from the UEFA cup by Bologna (0:3/2:2), and the 8th rank in the championship was considered a failure. Jury Morosov, who once was assistant to Valerj Lobanowski, stepped in. Despite his prestige and experience he was unable to bring success back to Zenit. After ten rounds and only three wins his record is negative. He has not found a solution to the problems in the offensive midfield. The team pillars Berezowsky, goalkeeper of Armenia's national team, Alexej Igonin, Maxim Demenko and Dimitri Dawidov, who, by the way, played with his father Anatoly three years ago..., are all defenders. Moreover, Alexander Panov, who has scored four of the seven goals so far, would like to leave the club for France's second division, as does Berezowsky. | |
| Peter I. gab der Stadt in Anlehnung an den Apostel St. Peter ihren heutigen Namen. Er war es auch, der im 17. Jahrhundert die Festung und den Hafen erstellen liess. Bis zur bolschewistischen Revolution (1917) konnte sich das heutige Kultur- und Wirtschaftszentrum Russlands dessen Hauptstadt nennen. Im damaligen Leningrad wurde der Fussballverein unter der Bezeichnung Stalinez gegründet, seit 1940 heisst er Zenit. Trotz dem Cupsieg vom Mai 1999 wurde Trainer Anatolj Dawidow im Winter abgesetzt, nach dem Zenit in der 1. Runde des UEFA-Cups gegen Bologna ausschied (h 0:3/a 2:2) und der 8. Rang in der Meisterschaft eine Enttäuschung darstellte. Jury Morosow, der einst Nationaltrainer Valerj Lobanowski zur Seite stand, trat Dawidows Nachfolge an. Trotz grossem Ansehen und Erfahrung konnte er Zenit kurzfristig nicht zum Erfolg zurück führen. Nach zehn Runden ist seine Bilanz mit nur drei Siegen negativ. Keine Lösung der Probleme fand er bisher im offensiven Mittelfeld. Mit dem armenischen Nationalgoalie Berezowsky, den Verteidigern Alexej Igonin, Maxim Demenko und Dimitri Dawidow (der übrigens bis vor drei Jahren noch zusammen mit... seinem Vater Anatoly verteidigte) stehen die Leistungsträger allesamt in der Defensive. Und Alexander Panov, der von bisher sieben Toren Zenits vier erzielt hat, möchte im Herbst zusammen mit Berezowsky in die französischen Liga wechseln. | |
