Last summer, when the north-west of Turkey was shaken by a heavy earthquake, several thousand people died in the city of Izmit. For fear of further earthquakes eleven players left the club before the beginning of the season. With their small squad Kocaelispor fought against relegation for a long time. Thanks to a very good performance in spring the team of coach Kurtar finally finished 12th. The reason for this recovery was a number of transfers the club was able to make in the winter. One of the new players is Wjatcheslav Kamoltsev, who came from Torpedo Moscow. Because of his speed he is the perfect striker for the team, as Kurtar has them play the counter-attack. The best goal-scorer of the team is Roman Dabrowski, who has the Polish and Turkish citizenship. Last season he scored 14 goals. The support from the midfield comes from Misko Mirkovic. The Yugoslav played a very strong season in central midfield. Kocaelispor hat ein schwieriges Jahr hinter sich, wahrscheinlich das problematischste in seiner 34-jährigen Geschichte. Als im vergangenen Sommer der Nord-Westen der Türkei von einem schweren Erdbeben heimgesucht wurde, starben in der Stadt Izmit mehrere Tausend Menschen. Aus Furcht vor weiteren Beben verliessen noch vor Beginn der Meisterschaft elf Spieler den Verein. Mit einem schmalen Kader spielte Kocaelispor deshalb lange Zeit gegen den Abstieg. Dank besserer Leistungen im Frühjahr belegte die Mannschaft von Trainer Kurtar schliesslich den zwölften Platz. Grund für den Aufschwung in der zweiten Saisonhälfte waren einige Transfers, die der Verein im Winter tätigen konnte. Einer der neuen Spieler ist der Russe Wjatscheslaw Kamoltsew, der von Torpedo Moskau in die Türkei wechselte. Dank seiner Schnelligkeit ist er der ideale Stürmer für Kocaelispor, denn Kurtar lässt sein Team stets auf Konter spielen. Topskorer der Mannschaft ist der polnisch-türkische Doppelbürger Roman Dabrowski. In der vergangenen Spielzeit gelangen ihm 14 Tore. Aus dem Mittelfeld werden die beiden Stürmer von Misko Mirkovic unterstützt. Der Jugoslawe spielte eine starke Saison im zentralen Mittelfeld.
