| Shirak FC was founded in 1958 in Leninakan, today's Gyumri. Between 1970 and 1980 the club was called Olympia. Some enthusiasts took over the club in 1991, investing their own money into the development of the football in the city. Garnik Khachatryan was elected president then, and he is still in office, as well as Andranik Adamyan, who has been the coach since 1991. He did not only play for Gyumri but also in Russia's 2nd Division. Shirak calls itself the most consistent and popular club of Armenia. The City stadium holds only 1600 spectators so it is no wonder that the club depends on the financial support of the city. The population identifies strongly with the club, which is, by the way, considered the best football school of the country. Midfielder Artur Petrosyan, who scored 110 goals in 190 matches, and defender Harutyun Wardanyan, both pillars of the national team and the Swiss club Young Boys Bern, grew up with Shirak. In five attempts, the club never survived the qualification round of the European Cups. After rank 3 last fall the team underwent major changes. Karen Alexanyan, the 21 year old midfielder, member of the U21 selection, is only 1.65 metres tall and weighs a mere 60 kg. The most experience players are Hakob Artoyan in defence Hovhannes Takhmazyan in midfield. | |
| Der Shirak FC wurde 1958 im damaligen Leninakan, dem heutigen Gyumri, gegründet. Zwischen 1970 und 1980 nannte sich der Verein "Olympia". Einige Enthusiasten übernahmen den Klub 1991 und investierten ihr eigenes Geld in die Entwicklung des Fussballs in der Stadt. Zum Präsidenten wählten sie bereits damals Garnik Khachatryan. Und auch der Trainer ist mit Andranik Adamyan seit zehn Jahren der Gleiche. Er war einst nicht nur in Gyumri aktiv, sondern auch in der 2. Division Russlands. Shirak rühmt sich deshalb als stabilster und populärster Verein Armeniens. Das City-Stadion bietet nur 1600 Zuschauern Platz, deshalb ist Shirak finanziell auf die Unterstützung durch die Stadt angewiesen. In der Bevölkerung ist es sehr gut verankert. Zudem hat es den Ruf der besten "Fussball-Schmiede" des Landes. Aufbauer Artur Petrosyan, der für Shirak in 190 Pflichtspielen 110 Tore schoss, und Verteidiger Harutyun Wardanyan, beides Teamstützen der Nationalmannschaft und des Schweizer Erstdivisionärs Young Boys Bern, wurden bei Shirak gross. Nach dem 3. Rang im vergangenen Herbst wurde die Mannschaft stark verändert. Vom aktuellen Kader gehört Karen Alexanyan der U21-Auswahl an. Der 21-jährige Mittelfeldspieler ist nur 1,65 m gross und 60 kg schwer. Die Erfahrensten sind Hakob Artoyan in der Abwehr und Hovhannes Takhmazyan im Mittelfeld.
