In 1998 they got the better of the major clubs from Vienna and Innsbruck by winning the Cup. Last season they were even on their way to the UEFA Cup, but then coach Helmut Kronjäger was fired by President Wolfgang Deschberger on alleged grounds of boring playing style. Under the new coach Alfred Tatar the club dropped to rank 7, featuring a negative goal average, as they allowed a lot of goals. It is more the fighting than the playing element that marks the strength of the team, especially at home. The many players from the region form a very homogenous team. Mit seinem minimalen Budget von 5,6 Mio. Franken gehört der SV Ried seit dem Aufstieg vor sechs Jahren zu den Abstiegsfavoriten, hält sich aber regelmässig über den Erwartungen. Einen Streich spielten die Rieder den Grossklubs aus Wien und Innsbruck 1998, als sie den Cup gewannen. Letzte Saison befanden sie sich sogar auf dem Weg in den UEFA-Cup, wegen angeblich unattraktiver Spielweise wurde dann aber Trainer Helmut Kronjäger von Präsident Wolfgang Deschberger entlassen. Unter seinem Nachfolger Alfred Tatar fiel Ried auf den 7. Rang zurück und wies wegen der vielen Gegentore letztlich eine negative Tordifferenz auf. Nicht das spielerische sondern das kämpferische Element stellt vor allem in den Heimspielen die Stärke der Mannschaft dar. Die vielen Spieler aus der Region treten sehr geschlossen auf.
