Baku, the capital, where Vilash will play their home matches in the UIC, is 280 kilometres away. The population lives mainly off of agriculture and tea growing. Vilash turned to professional structures in 1992, when Azerbaijan organised its own championship for the first time. The club has been in the highest league ever since, finishing 3rd this summer, the best result in history. Vilash are not only being supported by president Ramasan Seinalov but also by the city authorities. A year ago they were eliminated from the 1st round of the UIC by Zaglebie Lubin (0:4/1:3). It was their only appearance in an international competition. Coach Gachraman Aliew, who played in the Soviet Championship with Neftchi Baku in the seventies, has been in power for six years. He has no international players in his squad, but defender Mobaris Orudchev and midfielder Abusar Ibragimov are on the doorstep of the national selection, which made headlines lately by beating the Slovak team 2:0 in the qualification for the World Cup. The fans like the team for their technically skilled and swift offensive playing style, but on an international level they will lack not only experience but also size and power, as most players are rather short and slim. Das subtropische Masalli liegt ganz im Süden des Landes direkt an der Grenze zum Iran. Die Hauptstadt Baku, wo Vilash seine Heimspiele im UEFA-Intertoto-Cup austragen muss, liegt 280 km entfernt. Die Bevölkerung Masallis lebt vorwiegend vom Ackerbau und von der Teekultur. Vilash nahm den Profibetrieb erst 1992 auf, als Aserbaidschan erstmals einen eigenen Meisterschaftsbetrieb durchführte. Seither spielt es in der obersten Spielklasse und erreichte diesen Sommer mit Rang 3 seine bisher beste Klassierung. Finanziell unterstützt wird der Verein nicht nur von Präsident Ramasan Seinalow sondern auch von der Stadtregierung. Vor Jahresfrist scheiterten die Aseri in der 1. Runde des UEFA-Intertoto-Cups an den Polen von Zaglebie Lubin (0:4/1:3). Es war dies der bisher einzige Auftritt Vilashs auf internationaler Ebene. Trainer Gachraman Aliew, der Mitte der 70-er Jahre mit Neftschi Baku in der sowjetischen Meisterschaft spielte, ist seit sechs Jahren im Amt. Ihm stehen keine Nationalspieler zur Verfügung. Verteidiger Mobaris Orudschew und Mittelfeldspieler Abusar Ibragimow stehen aber an der Schwelle zur Landesauswahl, die mit ihrem 2:0-Sieg in der WM-Qualifikation gegen die Slowakei kürzlich für Aufsehen sorgte. Wegen seines technisch kultivierten und schnellen Offensivspiels ist Vilash sehr beliebt. Im internationalen Vergleich werden der Mannschaft nicht nur Erfahrung sondern vor allem Zentimeter und Kilogramme fehlen.
