Their victims in the UEFA Cup were clubs such as Dynamo Moscow, Dundee United, Real Sociedad San Sebastian and Nantes. But Lokeren, which merged with local rival Sint-Niklaas in the meantime, were unable to equal these scoops ever since. For the new season, Georges Leekens, who had been the Belgian national coach in the 1998 World Cup in France, was replaced by Paul Put. Put’s last employer was Ingelmünster, a second league club. He will have to work hard, if he wants to coach the multi-cultural squad to an equally good result (4th rank) as his predecessor. His players come from Belgium, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Iceland, Bosnia, Congo, Burundi, Guinea, Togo and Ivory Coast... The many African players make the squad fairly athletic, while Arnar Gretarsson, who came from AEK Athens a year ago, adds swiftness and skill. A lot of danger was created by the free kicks of the tall Christiaan Janssens. The best scorer of the team is Adekamni Olufade from Togo. Auf europäischer Ebene durchlebte Lokeren seine besten Zeiten Anfang der 80er-Jahre. Im UEFA-Cup gehörten damals Dynamo Moskau, Dundee United, Real Sociedad San Sebastian und Nantes zu den Opfern der Belgier. Seither ist es ruhiger geworden um Lokeren, das übrigens vor einem Jahr mit dem lokalen Zweitdivisionär Sint-Niklaas fusioniert hat. Georges Leekens, der Belgien an der WM 1998 in Frankreich betreut hatte, wurde auf die neue Saison durch Paul Put ersetzt. Put war zuletzt beim Zweitligisten Ingelmünster tätig. Er wird es schwer haben, mit seiner Multikultitruppe ein ähnliches Ergebnis wie sein Vorgänger (Rang 4) zu erreichen. Seine Spieler kommen aus Belgien, Tschechien, Slowenien, Island, Bosnien, Gambia, Kongo, Burundi, Guinea, Togo und der Elfenbeinküste... Wegen der vielen Afrikaner liegen die Stärken der Mannschaft im athletischen Bereich. Die Verpflichtung Arnar Gretarssons (AEK Athen) vor Jahresfrist hat sich bewährt. Gefürchtet werden zudem die Freistösse des grossgewachsenen Christiaan Janssens. Bester Skorer ist der Togolese Adekamni Olufade.
