They organised social events, discussions and played music. 20 years later the club transformed into something else. It was called "Musical, linguistic and humanistic club". Only then Anorthosis took up sports. In 1936 Anorthosis performed in the first Championship of Cyprus. Famagusta is a small town in the Northern part of Cyprus, which has been occupied by Turkish troops since 1974. Anorthosis moved to the harbour town Larnaca, 50 kilometres away, on the South coast of the Island. Between 1997 and 1999 the club qualified for the UEFA Cup through the qualification round of the Champions League. Last season, Anorthosis finished only on place 4 after four consecutive Championships. Afterwards the team was completely reconstructed. Three new foreigners, four experienced players from Cyprus and six U21 players are supposed to build the backbone of the team. Moreover, the club needs a new coach to replace coach Dusan Mitosevic. In the meantime the current assistant coach Nikolai Kostov is responsible for the team. The strong defenders Nikos Nicolaou, Marios Pashialis and Andonis Kezos have already been signed. The 33 year old forward Panikos Xiourouppas will be responsible for scoring. Einige Intellektuelle gründeten 1911 in der damaligen Stadt Ammochostos den Verein. Sie verfolgten vorerst keine sportlichen Ziele. Stattdessen war Anorthosis ein "Leseklub" mit ethnischen und sozialen Ideen. Gesellschaftliche Anlässe wurden durchgeführt, Reden gehalten und Musik gespielt. 20 Jahre später änderten die Ambitionen des Vereins, der sich nun "Musikalischer, sprachwissenschaftlicher und menschenfreundlicher Klub" nannte. Erst in dieser Zeit wurden sportlichen Aktivitäten aufgenommen. 1936 nahm Anorthosis an der ersten zypriotischen Meisterschaft teil. Famagusta ist eine Kleinstadt im nördlichen Teil Zyperns, der seit 1974 von türkischen Truppen besetzt wird. Anorthosis fand Zuflucht in der 50 Kilometer entfernt gelegenen Hafenstadt Larnaca an der Südküste der Insel. Von 1997 bis 1999 erreichten die Zyprioten dreimal die letzte Qualifikationsrunde der Champions League und wurden in den UEFA-Cup "relegiert". Nach vier Meistertiteln in Folge reichte es Anorthosis in der vergangenen Saison nur zum 4. Rang. Die Folge davon ist ein kompletter Umbau der Mannschaft. Drei neue Ausländer, vier erfahrene zypriotische Akteure und sechs U21-Nationalspieler sollen das Gerippe des neuen Teams bilden. Ausserdem muss ein Nachfolger für Trainer Dusan Mitosevic gefunden werden. Interimistisch ist der bisherige Assistenzcoach Nikolai Kostov für die Mannschaft verantwortlich. Die Zuzüge der starken Verteidiger Nikos Nicolaou, Marios Pashialis und Andonis Kezos stehen bereits fest. Im Angriff soll der bereits 33jährige Panikos Xiourouppas für Tore sorgen.
