| It was two years ago, when Hapoel Haifa celebrated their biggest success: After winning the Championship for the first time ever, the team from the harbour town in the North of Israel overcame Beziktas Istanbul in the Champions League qualifying round (a 1:1/h 0:0), but against Valencia, which went on to play the final later in the season, Hapoel missed the qualification for the group matches (0:2/0:2) and played the UEFA Cup instead. There the team under coach Eli Gutmann eliminated Brügge (h 3:1/ a 2:4) before being defeated by Ajax Amsterdam (h 0:3/a 1:0). This same year, however, the performance in the championship was disappointing; Hapoel finished the season only 7th. Last year's 3rd rank on the other hand satisfied the club and the fans alike, although it was more than painful to see city rival Maccabi, of all teams, win the Championship. Gutmann, who has been with the club since 1997, can rely on a tough defence. Among the flat back four there are Ran Ben-Shimon, Alon Halfon and Ofer Talken, three members of the national team, while behind them Dudu Awat, the goalkeeper of the national team, defends the Hapoel goal. On the other end of the pitch, Amir Turjeman is the most dangerous striker. The 29 year old has already scored 92 goals in Israel's highest league. | |
| Vor zwei Jahren verzeichnete Hapoel Haifa seinen grössten Erfolg. Nach dem ersten Meistertitel setzte sich das Team aus der Hafenstadt im Norden des Landes in der Champions-League-Qualifikation über Besiktas Istanbul hinweg (a 1:1/h 0:0). Gegen den späteren Finalisten Valencia (0:2/0:2)verpassten die Israeli die Gruppenspiele und wurden in den UEFA-Cup weiter gereicht. Dort eliminierte das Team von Trainer Eli Gutman Brügge (h 3:1/a 2:4), ehe es gegen Ajax Amsterdam ausschied (h 0:3/a 1:0). Dagegen waren die Leistungen in der Meisterschaft unbefriedigend, Hapoel wurde als Titelverteidiger lediglich Siebter. Mit dem dritten Platz in der vergangenen Saison war man im Umfeld des Vereins aber wieder zufrieden, auch wenn es schmerzte, dass ausgerechnet Stadtrivale Maccabi Meister wurde. Gutmann, der seit 1997 im Amt ist, kann vor allem auf eine starke Abwehr bauen. In der Viererkette agieren mit Ran Ben-Shimon, Alon Halfon und Ofer Talken drei aktuelle Internationale, hinter ihnen steht Dudu Awat, der Torhüter der Nationalmannschaft. Im Sturm gilt es Amir Turjeman zu beachten. Der 29-Jährige hat in der höchsten Liga Israels bereits 92 Tore erzielt. | |
