Rizespor were the team of the year in 2000. Thanks to the support of a fanatic crowd – there are often more than 20 000 in the Atatürk stadium – Rizespor are hard to beat at home. The team of the Slovak coach Karol Pecze had the fourth best home record of the league and swept away Champions League participant Beziktas Istanbul 5:1. The team from the harbour town 1300 kilometres East of Istanbul on the Black Sea rely heavily on African players. The most outstanding player is Emmanuel Tetteh from Ghana, who had played for IFK Göteborg, Polonia Warsaw, Winterthur and St. Truiden. Last season he and the former Galatasaray player Akyüz Saffet formed a dangerous forward line. The defence is held together by Oumar Djeng from France. Just like Tetteh and Saffet Djeng joined Rizespor after their promotion. The 29 year old gained international experience by playing for Sampdoria Genova and Paris St-Germain. Ein Jahr nach dem ersten Aufstieg in die höchste Liga der Türkei nach über zwanzig Jahren spielt Rizespor erstmals in einem internationalen Wettbewerb. Die Mannschaft war die Entdeckung der vergangenen Saison. Dank der Unterstützung des fanatischen Publikums, oft sind rund 20 000 Zuschauer im Stadion Atatürk, ist Rizespor sehr heimstark. So wies das Team des slowakischen Trainers Karol Pecze die viertbeste Heimbilanz auf und bezwang Champions-League-Teilnehmer Besiktas Istanbul 5:1. Der Verein aus der Hafenstadt, rund 1300 km östlich von Istanbul am Schwarzen Meer gelegen, setzt in erster Linie auf Afrikaner. Der Auffälligste von ihnen ist Emmanuel Tetteh. Der Ghanaer hatte zuvor in Europa schon bei IFK Göteborg, Polonia Warschau, Winterthur und St. Truiden gespielt. Seit einem Jahr bildet er mit dem ehemaligen Galatasaray-Akteur Akyüz Saffet ein gefährliches Sturmduo. Die Abwehr wird von Oumar Djeng dirigiert. Wie Tetteh und Saffet stiess auch der Franzose nach dem Aufstieg zu Rizespor. Erfahrungen im internationalen Fussball sammelte der 29-Jährige vor allem bei seinen Engagements bei Sampdoria Genua und Paris St-Germain.
