The club was founded in 1958 under the name of Avangard and renamed to Tavriya five years later. During the Soviet period the qualification for the Cup semi-final in 1987 was the biggest success. In 1992 Tavriya won the first Ukrainian Championship by beating Dynamo Kiew 1:0 in the decisive match, but a year later they were very close to being relegated. In 1994 they lost the penalty kicks 3:5 in the Cup Final against Tchernomorets Odessa. They appeared only once on an international level. In 1992 Simferopol eliminated Shelbourne (IRL) in the qualification for the Champions Cup (a 0:0/h 1:3), but clearly lost to Sion from Switzerland (a 1:4/h 1:3). Already then the team made a lasting impression in terms of power and discipline, but the obvious lack of experience did not help in scoring. Also today the management considers the team work their greatest asset, while they deplore the poor taking of their chances. The defenders Dmitro Nazarov and Oleksandr Mytrofanov and midfielder Oleg Motchulyak, who joined Tyvriya from Tchernomorets, were members of the juniors' national team. The club is being supported by the airline Aerosvit, which flies to 19 airports in 16 countries. Simferopol ist die Hauptstadt der Halbinsel Krim. Während der sowjetischen Zeit stellte die Qualifikation für den Cup-Halbfinal 1987das grösste Erfolgserlebnis dar. 1992 wurde Tavriya dank einem 1:0-Sieg im entscheidenden Spiel gegen Dynamo Kiew erster ukrainischer Meister, ein Jahr später entging es nur knapp dem Abstieg. 1994 unterlag es im Cupfinal Tschernomorets Odessa 3:5 im Penaltyschiessen (0:0). Auf europäischer Ebene trat es erst einmal in Erscheinung; 1992 setzten sich die Ukrainer in der Qualifikation zum Meistercup gegen Shelbourne (IRL) durch (a 0:0/h 2:1), unterlagen aber in der 1. Runde Sion (SUI) klar (a 1:4/h 1:3). Punkto Athletik und Disziplin machte die Mannschaft schon damals einen guten Eindruck, in Tornähe war sie aber viel zu unerfahren. Auch heute bezeichnet die Klubführung das Team-work als grösste Stärke, bemängelt jedoch die Chancenauswertung. Die Verteidiger Dmitro Nazarow und Oleksandr Mytrofanow sowie Aufbauer Oleg Motschulyak, der von Tschernomorets zu Tavriya stiess, haben für die Jugend-Nationalmannschaft gespielt. Finanziell getragen wird der Klub von der Fluggesellschaft Aerosvit, die 19 Flughäfen in 16 Ländern anfliegt.
