Oil refineries, steel companies and wine-growing are the main sources of income for the 65 000 inhabitants. The club, founded by Ernest Redlinski, an engineer, was taken over by the iron and steel company in 1992. After having suffered a long time in Serbia's 2nd Division, the club was finally promoted to Yugoslavia's highest league in 1998. The development of young players has always been the main focus of the club. Sartid is known for having the best fans. The 12 500 seats in the stadium are often sold out. In the spring of 2000 the management had to be replaced, and only significant investments of the Sartid company prevented the club from dropping back into the second category. No less than seven experienced players of the first division were quickly signed. They not only saved the team from relegation but lead it to the best result in the club's history. Coach Jovica Skoro is considered an excellent motivator. The most important man in defence is Midrad Mrdak. There is a lot of potential in the five-man midfield; Boris Vaskovic, however, is about to be transferred to Torino (ITA). Dragan Radosavljevic (19), too, the left midfielder in the U21 selection, will leave the club soon, probably for Ajax Amsterdam. Another UIC participant, Waalwijk, is likely to sign Nenad Mirosavljevic, who came to Smederevo from Zrenjanin in the fall. Bereits im 15. Jahrhundert war die Stadt an der Donau Hauptort Serbiens. Division erreichte der FK Sartid sechs Jahre später sein ursprüngliches Ziel; die höchste Liga Jugoslawiens. Grosse Bedeutung wird seit jeher der Entwicklung junger Spieler beigemessen. Der Klub ist bekannt für die besten Fans im Land, so sind die 12 500 Sitzplätze des öftern ausverkauft. Im Frühling 2000 musste der Vorstand ersetzt werden und nur die grossen Investitionen der Sartid-Fabrik bewahrten den Verein vor einem Rückfall ins 2. Glied. Gleich sieben erfahrene Erstdivisionsspieler wurden in Eile geholt. Sie trugen nicht nur zur Rettung bei, sondern führten Sartid nun sogar zum besten Resultat der Klubgeschichte. Trainer Jovica Skoro gilt als exzellenter Motivator. Wichtigster Mann in der Abwehr ist Midrad Mrdak. Sehr viel Potential steckt im Fünfer-Mittelfeld. Allerdings steht Boris Vaskovic vor einem Transfer zu Torino (ITA). Auf dem Absprung ist auch Dragan Radosavljevic (19). Der linke Aufbauer der U21-Auswahl soll zu Ajax Amsterdam wechseln. Beim holländischen UEFA-Intertoto-Cup-Teilnehmer Waalwijk im Gespräch ist Nenad Mirosavljevic. Er kam erst im Herbst von Absteiger Zrenjanin nach Smederevo.
